(Poem #1080) The Lama The one-l lama, He's a priest. The two-l llama, He's a beast. And I will bet A silk pajama There isn't any Three-l lllama.* |
(to which Nash appended the footnote *The author's attention has been called to a type of conflagration known as a three-alarmer. Pooh. ) This is probably Nash's best known poem, and for good reason. Not only does he provide a wonderfully quotable mnemonic, he goes on to extend it with an almost Carrollian piece of whimsy, carrying the progression through to its logical conclusion (why *isn't* there a three-l lllama anyway?). And the footnote is a delightful piece of icing on the cake, there being something so Nashian about the pun that I have to wonder whether it was part of the poem all along. -martin [Afterthought] 'llama' would, of course, be pronounced 'yama' in the original Spanish, though it has been quite thoroughly Anglicised by now.

Liver Transplant is usually a treatment option for those whose conditions can’t be controlled with other treatments. It is also an option for those with liver cancer. There is no specific time or age for a liver failure as such as it may happen quickly or over a long period. When liver failure occurs quickly in a short span, it is known as acute liver failure. Acute Liver Failure arises due to complications from certain medications. Liver transplant is more often used to treat chronic liver failure however, it can treat acute liver failure as well.

John said:
"Love the poems, and this one (Nash) is one of my favorites, too. But llama
is actually a Quechua (or Kechua i.e. Andean indiginous) word that most
likely was pronounced as it is spelled, given that, as far as I can find out
late on a Friday night, it is pronounced in Spanish as it is in English
(i.e. lama). Etymology from Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary 2nd ed.,
pronunciation from a Professor of Spanish at U Conn, Stamford."
John, that is wrong, and I'm not sure what the Spanish professor is doing; certainly not teaching Spanish. Because Spanish is phonetically regular, and the ll is not two l's but a separate letter altogether, and is pronounced like a y. In Spanish, it has ALWAYS been pronounced "yama". Full stop. Dig deeper into the stories of origins, and you will see that the Spaniards pretty much invented their own word, not having been able to understand the locals. And you can't use the scientific name as an explanation, because it is retrospectively derivative from Linnaeus' taxonomic identification from 1758, at least 150 years after the Europeans screwed up the spelling. Spanish, at the time, had no letter y and, even today, the y is called "the Greek I" in Spanish. For the consonant y sound, Spanish invariably uses ll.
Back to the "discovery" of the llama. The origins are, at best, apocryphal, as there is no corroboration from other sources that the Quechua ever originally used llama at all, instead using terms more aligned with alpaca and vicunia. But the chroniclers caused two lines of confusion by using Spanish orthography to refer to something not Spanish in any way, and also by drawing a taxonomy line backwards to assert lama in the scientific name. And now, many years later, English speakers, refusing to even listen to the way others speak, assert dominance circularly over pronucuation, embed it on the web, and there you go. Thank you, British Empire.
We'll never know what the Quechua used themselves. After centuries, the name became embedded, including its letter-confusion.
I'm still curious what any respectable Spanish professor would be doing in asserting that Spanish pronounces ll as l. That's the most absurd thing I have heard.
To make a long story short, if we were to heed the Spaniards, for us English-speaking people, we should have transliterated llama as yama from the very beginning. So, in English it is now "lama". But don't keep saying that's because it's how the Quechua OR the Spanish pronounced it. That's demonstrably false. Centuries later, English speakers are still quite ignorant that ll in Spanish is pronouced "y"
